Wi-Fi/EMF Health Scares

Despite a strong scientific consensus that there is no public health risk from the radio-frequency radiation emitted by wi-fi transmitters and other devices, anxious parents have recently been lobbying school boards, libraries, and local governments to ban the installation of wi-fi systems in public buildings. Their fear is driven by a highly organized campaign spreading misinformation based on personal anecdote and discredited fringe science. CASS is producing educational materials for distribution to organizations feeling the pressure of this campaign, to help them to make rational decisions on the basis of the best available science.

Are Cell Phones and Wi-Fi Safe?

A group of parents recently petitioned the Barrie, Ont., school board to disconnect WiFi in their schools. They claimed that their children were suffering from a grab-bag of non-specific ailments such as nausea, headaches, dizziness and even heart palpitations. They blamed these symptoms on WiFi exposure. Their claims were backed up by statements from a couple of supposed “experts,” one of whom even has a PhD.
 

CFI Canada submits brief to HESA on WiFi

Toronto, ON (Dec 2 2010) –  “The Standing Committee on Health (HESA) has stood by the scientific method and taken the prudent approach in its latest report on radio-frequency (RF) radiation”  Says Michael Kruse, co-chair of CASS at CFI. “The report released today by HESA refused to buy in to the alarmist and pseudo-scientific opinions voiced by the likes of Magda Havas and Rodney Palmer, and instead advocates for the scientific investigation by the Council of Canadian Academies into any possible health effects.”

Toronto, ON (Nov 9 2010) – The Committee for the Advancement of Scientific Skepticism (CASS) today responded to dubious claims that microwave radiation, in forms of WiFi networks and cell phone use, can be dangerous.  The committee submitted a brief to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health (HESA) presenting overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
